Tip for parents: Active Listening for Strong Connections

Active listening is a powerful tool that strengthens the bond between parents and children.

Here’s a simple way to practice active listening:

Tip 1

Be present: Give your child your undivided attention. Put away distractions and focus solely on them during the conversation.

Tip 2

Maintain eye contact: Show your child that you’re fully attentive by looking into their eyes.

Tip 3

Show empathy: Try to understand their emotions and experiences without judgment. Validate their feelings and let them know you’re there to support them.

Tip 4

Use verbal and non-verbal cues: Nodding, smiling, and providing verbal affirmations like “I understand” or “Tell me more” encourage your child to express themselves freely.

Tip 5

Paraphrase and reflect: Summarize what your child has said to demonstrate that you genuinely comprehend their perspective. This shows that you are actively listening and trying to understand them better.
